It is true that you get what you pay for, but you may be paying too much for a video camera with extra features. Digital camera advertisements display many features that are used to try to reel the consumer in. How many features do these consumers actually use? Not many.
Do you really need twenty in-camera pattern wipes and special effects when you plan to edit the final video with your computer? Most contemporary editing programs will provide far greater flexibility and sophistication in post production than you could ever achieve in-camera.
Do not be drawn-in by ads that boast, “it is a digital video camera and a digital still-camera all in one!” Typically, the image quality of still pictures made with a video camera are low compared to a still-picture-only camera. A camera designed for a particular purpose will always provide a better quality image than one that tries to be everything in one form factor.
As far as the camera’s LCD monitor goes – - it is totally up to you. The bigger the screen the better, but the camera will be bigger too. Video cameras come with a viewfinder as well as an LCD screen. Various companies offer both color and black and white viewfinders. Although a color viewfinder mimics the LCD screen, a black and white viewfinder would provide you with a sharper image of your shot.
For live-shot composition, beware of the digital zoom. Optical zooming (created by the lens) does not magnify pixels like its digital counterpart.
The latest video cameras provide the means to record on mini-DV tape, direct-to-DVD, or even recording directly to a hard drive built right into the camera. Any of these options will work. Choosing between these options is determined by how much money you are willing to spend on the video camera. These days the most expensive cameras allow you to record right onto DVD or store the video on the camera’s hard drive, but mini-DV tape is still very good quality. There are many types of video cameras out there but the trick is to do the research and figure out what you will be using it for in order to make the best selection.
