For people who travel a lot, or have a long flight coming up for the holidays, it is always both hygienically and financially prudent to bring your own headphones with your carry-on luggage when boarding your airplane. You get to watch the movies, listen to the radio channels or just pretend that you are and use the headphones as noise cancelling ear covers, and you will not be charged an abominable surcharge for the use of a shoddy pair of airliner earphones. The airlines try to trick people into thinking that they have no other option, but there are adapters in the marketplace that will allow you to connect your own headphones, using the single 3.5 mm stereo plug of your headphones, into the standard dual airplane sockets.

An airplane’s stereo 3.5 mm headphone socket stereo adapter can be purchased online for about 4 Euros, or $10 Canadian. You simply plug the adapter into the airplane’s stereo jacks, and plug your headphone jack into the single 3.5 mm stereo plug, and you are listening in style. With a good set of headphones, they will act as noise cancellers, effectively drowning out the passengers talking and babies crying without having to drown out the noise with louder music. And, with the cost of the adapter being about equal to what airliners charge for the headphones that they pass out, the cost is made up with your first flight using it.

Of course, if you have a laptop computer and the adapter to plug it in for power, then you could use your headphones on your laptop as well. Instead of having to listen to what is on the airliners’ radio stations, or watching the movie that has been in the video stores for two weeks, you can watch what you want, when you want. The same can be said for I-pods and other music devices. You can use your personal headphones for your personal music player, so that nobody else has to listen to what you are listening to, which can be rather bothersome at times. Just as you may not like hearing that baby crying it’s lungs out, that baby just might be crying because of other noises within the airplane, coming from people who were not so thoughtful as to bring headphones.

Now that you know how to convert headphones wth a standard dual airplane socket to a 3.5 mm stereo socket, if you are looking for an adapter, simply type “dual airplane socket to stereo 3.5 mm jack” into your local search engine, on eBay, or any electrical supply store, like Radio Shack or Circuit City. Or, for the budget conscious people out there, these adapters can also sometimes be found in many of the different dollar stores. Happy shopping, and have a safe trip!
