Teenagers do a multitude of things that are often unexpalinable. If you are honest enough to recall, so did you! Changing hair color is a drop in the bucket of what may or may not happen during those years, and truly the least of anyone’s worries. Tennagers, girls as well as boys, come in droves to salons nationwide doing exactly what every other client is doing. They are simply trying to achieve a look to portray their image. For most teens their look may change several times during this part of life. This is simply the natural order when becoming aware of who you are. My look changed and continues to change. The up keep of color treated hair is also demanding. As a stylist I find that most teens with their own source of income have their hair professionally done once every six to eight weeks. Others may choose to color their hair at home. I find that the teens that color their hair most are the one’s that do not receive a professional service and buy home kits. Most likely these particular teens hair are in poor condition and often unattractive after time as the results of non professional coloring systems are harsh. I suggest if you are going to allow your teen to color their hair, that you encourage professional services. They are scheduled and the odds of a drastic change or mishap are far less likely. When teens use a home coloring system it is likely they will choose a level entirely too dark, or a level far to light and cause the hair to be orange, pink, or even melted. Most home coloring systems contain metallic salts. Metallic salts are so strong they pose trouble even to stylist when trying to remove hair color. I have corrected many “home jobs”, and not just on teenagers! Teenagers that are not just maintaining hair color and are changing drastically every so often or way too often are not abnormal. Some teens i have seen are genuinly trying to stay up to date in the latest fashions. They are fearless about changing their style as they know they can pull anything off! Kudos to them! Other do exactly what teens do. They screw up. They change their color far too much and eventually you get a huge mess. I know you have sen the teenager with a black line at their scalp, white roots that fade to burnt orange. Nevertheless, these same teens are attempting to do the exact same thing as everyone else. Some teens get haircuts, some buy shoes, some write journals, and some color their hair. These are all signs of individuality.
