So, it is now 40 years since the internet was first used. Who could have believed, in the beginning, how massive it would become in such a rather short period?

I recall, as a little child, contemplating how lucky were inventors like Alexander Graham Bell, being able to invent the telephone. Others had invented wireless, television, cinecamera. What was there left for such as my generation to think of? It is fortunate for us others had more vision than I did. We now benefit from mobile telephones, digital cameras, electronic games and many other brilliant items which I could not have even thought about as a child.

On the fortieth anniversary of the internet, it is interesting to see the differences we have seen in the use of PCs over this period. In the early days, there was no world wide web, so the internet was not the same as we think of at this time when we say we use it.

Not all companies had access to computers 40 years ago, without considering people having many PCs in their home. Even as late as the 1990’s the company where I worked had just one PC which would connect to the internet and all members of staff had to rely on this in order to connect with the internet.

In those days, the concept of using a search engine was an alien concept. Now Search Engine Placement is understood, by both companies and individuals, to be an integral part of internet experience. Seo companies have become available, in order to assist businesses improve their search engine positioning.

Because laptops are today relatively inexpensive, some houses will have more than one. Social networking sites have also found their niche, and this is a wonderful way for people to stay in touch with friends, relatives and colleagues in an informal fashion. Before these evolved it was all too easy to lose touch with individuals once they were no longer in their daily lives.

I am really happy that other people can come up with inventions to improve my daily life, and this all makes me wonder what we will be seeing 40 years from today – inventions at present in their infancy or not yet even conceived.
