What to consider before giving your hair a new color

So you have grown tired of seeing the same person in the mirror and you are thinking of a new color for your hair. There are plenty of hair color commercials on television telling you how you can now acheive a more beautiful color and condition at the same time. Well, that does sound nice.

You must realize, however, that not everyone’s hair type is the same. There are many things you must consider before coloring your hair.

First, what condition is your hair in? Is it dry? Brittle? Coarse? You can test your hair for it’s strength by pullin a strand from your head. Pull the strand between your fingers. Does it break easily? Then your hair is considered brittle. You wont want to lighten your hair in this state it may cause breakage. Another test to see if you have lot’s of split ends is to hold down on a large bunch of hair with one hand and rub upwards with the other. If it bunches or tangles you may want to consider a cut first for your ends may grab the color. This will cause your ends to be darker than the rest of your hair if you are going to a darker color.

Next you must consider your natural or current color. Do you have a lot of red in your color? If you do it will be very difficult to go to a light blonde.

You must also consider your skin tone. You don’t want a color that is going to make you look drab. Many beauty supply shops have hair test strands that you can hold next to your skin. You will want a color that compliments your skin tone.

Now, you have tested your hair and found your color. But, do you know if you are allergic to color? The best way to find out is to mix a small amount of color and put a dab on your skin. Wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction. Next, test the color on your hair to see if it will turn to the color you want. Cut a small strand from a hidden place on your head. Tape the strand together and place some of the color on the test strand. Wait until color has developed , rinse and dry and look to see if it is the color you want.

The best advice that I can give you before you consider coloring your hair is to make sure that your hair is in its best condition first. Have some intense conditioning treatments a couple of weeks before you process your hair and if needed get a trim. Pick a color that you will be proud of and don’t worry about what others might say. It is how you feel that matters.
