Metal detecting for treasure can be a fun and lucrative pastime, but there is much to learn as a novice! The first and most important step is to choose a metal detector that is right for you. As a beginner you will want to purchase a detector that is simple to use, relatively inexpensive, but still performs well in identifying and discriminating between targets.
From my experience, I could recommend the following metal detectors for beginners searching for treasure on land:
1. Garrett Ace 250 (Cost: $250)
2. Tesoro Silver uMax (Cost: $250)

3. Whites Prizm II (Cost: $250)
4. Bounty Hunter Tracker IV (Cost: $160)
These models are all relatively accurate at finding targets on land, can discriminate quite well between trash and treasure, and work well in various terrains. The biggest plus, however, is the fact that they are all very user-friendly, and easy to learn how to use.
If your primary interest is to search for treasure in salt or freshwater, you will need to purchase a waterproof detector built for underwater use. This is going to cause a dramatic increase in price. That being said, I would recommend the following:
1. Garrett GTI 2500 (Cost: $700)
2. Tesoro Sand Shark (Cost: $600)
3. Whites Surfmaster PI Pro (Cost: $700)
Once you choose your first metal detector, you should get out there and use it as much as possible: at the beach, the park, even your own backyard. The more ground that you cover, the more likely it is that you will find treasure! As you practice, you will get better at targeting treasure over trash, and will learn how to pick better places to search.
As a beginner you may want to consider joining a metal detecting club. Learning from others is one of the best ways to learn how to use a metal detector, and can also provide great advice as to where to search for coins and treasure. Check out gometaldetecting.com/links-clu bs.htm to find a club in your local area. You also may want to consider purchasing a book specialized in metal detecting.
With the right gear and plenty of practice, maybe you will strike it rich!
