DSL (Digital Subscriber’s Line) uses the existing phone connection whereas cable rquires a new extension cable into the building. DSL’s speed and stability is determined by how far you are from the telephone exchange, and the quality of those cables. Cable’s speed and stability is determined by how many users are there online at the same time.
DSL works by using digital signals at a separate frequency to the telephone’s. Filters can be used to enable the telephone and Internet connection to be always on. In essence, both cable and DSL are to the same effect of having a permanent connection available. Cable speeds vary by the number of users, and is usually faster than the traditional ADSL (A being asynchronous), but with ADSL2, and newer technologies…DSL tends to be better, usually if you are in a town/place with a lot of people.
