My house oozes with boys. Three boys and one dad to be more precise. I am, in fact, the only girl who resides here (unless you count cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens). Fortunately, I seem to have learned how to raise them. This fact doesn’t stop me from occasionally wondering what it would like to have had a baby girl to lavish with dolls and dress in the pink frilly outfits predominantly displayed on the racks at such stores as Nordstrom’s. Perhaps I have gotten just a little bit ahead of myself on this one.

The truth would be that I don’t just wonder occasionally. I want to be mom to a daughter. Somehow, I have never quite gotten my boys into girly things like scrap booking or smelling perfumes and none of them currently have a hankering to wear soft lacy things. It wasn’t always this way. My first born it didn’t really matter. Had he been a girl I would have truly been just as happy. The second, I couldn’t have cared less if he had been pink with blue dots or blue with pink dots. It took us 4- years to conceive. His big brother had a definite opinion though. He wanted a baby brother. Two days before his 6th birthday his baby brother was born. The third one we were all hoping for that little bouncing girl. Big brother had his little brother and now he wanted the sister too. I still clearly remember him leaving the ultrasound room in tears when the doctor said it was another boy.

So now years later, as I ponder having one last child, I would be less then truthful to say I don’t pause because what if I have another boy. Sure, I know that nature keeps a fair balance of boys to girls. I know I shouldn’t try to mess with this. I simply have no reason to try to make a girl other then I want to. This small fact didn’t stop me from wanting to learn if I could choose to have a girl instead of a baby. A quick search on how many hits are received on “How to Choose Your Baby’s Sex” sites shows I’m not the only one either.

The fact is that the male chooses the sex. Each of his sperm will either carry and “X” chromosome (female) or the “Y” chromosome (male). This is probably at least vaguely familiar to most of us from high school biology. What isn’t often mentioned is that, humans being humans, we have taken this fact and used it to create what we want. Given sufficient time and money a couple truly can choose the sex of their child. They may wish to do this for cultural reasons or perhaps because they carry a genetic disease
