I have been working for a call centre as an administrator since 2005. I often work late nights and our company cab usually picks me up and drops me at my home. In May 2006, I was the last person to be dropped home. It was 2 a.m. and the driver rode on a different way and when I asked him he casually said that he was taking a short cut. Not being too familiar with this road, I hesitantly nodded to him. Though I was eager to reach home early, a slight doubt crept in my mind. The car entered one of the dimly lit streets and stopped. The driver got down and said that there was some problem with the engine. Panic struck me. I suddenly remembered the alarm button inside the car, which is linked to our office control room. I put my hand on the alarm button just in case. The driver saw me, opened the door and pushed me on the seat and tried to prevent me from pushing the button.
I did press the button, but was not sure if the alarm had been communicated. But fortunately, it had. The staff, who had heard me shouting on the alarm line, immediately notified the police. Somehow, I managed to run and stopped a taxi, begging the driver to take me home. The police, meanwhile, rushed to the spot and interrogated the driver. On my way home, I rang my father and we met halfway. I took leave for a week, trying to come to terms with what could have happened. Then our company conducted a meeting on the safety of women employees. As a result of meeting, new safety arrangements were out in place.
All of us decided that every women employee will carry a hidden camera along with herself so that all the happenings and incidents could be recorded in them and even latest tracking equipments like the hidden cameras were planted in every taxi.
